40x2  Parallel Character LCDPart Number: CFAH4002A-TFH-JTStandard 40x2 Character LCD – Dark On Light GrayIf you need to display a lot of information on your device, this extra wide LCD will do the job with an active area of 5.8-inches (147.50 millimeters). Like all transflective displays, the 5x8 character matrix on this 40 x 2 LCD screen can be read in direct sunlight, is good for typical office lighting, and is easy to read in dark locations. One of our customers bought a display in the CFAH4002A series to use in an environmental control system for irrigation management.

Sunlight readable
Adjust backlight contrast by using PWM (Pulse Width Modulation)
As with other standard character displays, the parallel interface communicates with your host using 4-bit or 8-bit mode. The built-in Sitronix ST7066U controller is compatible with the industry standard Hitachi HD44780 controller. Software written for the HD44780 should work without any changes. For controller details, see the Sitronix ST7066U datasheet on our website.
Our goal is to keep every product available as long as possible. We've sold the CFAH4002A series since 2008 and it is still going strong. With a white LED backlight, this FSTN (Film compensated Super-Twisted Neumatic) display module has a higher contrast ratio than the standard STN, resulting in superior sharpness and contrast. A simple current limiting resistor in line with the voltage source works well in most applications. The white LEDs do not demand a current source, although one may be used. For details, see the backlight section starting on page 22 of the datasheet.

Summary:	White LED backlight improvements: Less current, increased luminance.
Description:	Improvements to the white LED have resulted in less current with an increased luminance. Old Specifications: Typical Forward current of 60 mA at a forward voltage of 3.5v. Maximum forward voltage of 3.9v. Luminous intensity of 10 cd /m^2 New Specifications: Typical Forward current of 48 mA at a forward voltage of 3.5v. Maximum current of 75 mA Minimum current of 43.2 mA Maximum forward voltage of 3.6v Minimum forward voltage of 3.4v Luminous intensity of 133 to 167 cd /m^2 @ 48 mA Revised datasheet to follow.
Reason:	Improvements in white LED manufacturing have resulted in brighter, longer lasting LEDs that require less current. These improved LEDs have been designed into the backlight assembly of the CFAH4002A.
Impact:	All white LED backlight based CFAH4002A products.
Recommendation:	Review backlight driving circuits for white LED backlight CFAH4002A display modules and make the appropriate adjustments.
Availability:	This update effects all currently shipping CFAH4002A displays based on the white LED backlight.
Price Change:	There is no price change as a result of these improvements at this time.
